Cerasse Citrus Refresher: A Bitter Herb, Sweetly Transformed
Ooooh, cerasse (aka bitter melon leaf)—if you know, you know. It’s that boldly bitter Caribbean staple that’s been passed down through generations as the go-to for cleansing the blood, balancing the body, and shaking things up internally. But let’s be real: it’s not the easiest herb to sip on.
That’s where this blend comes in.
As The Herb Mixologist, I’m always experimenting with ways to make powerful herbs drinkable—even delicious. This Cerasse Citrus Refresher is a bright, balanced twist that keeps all the potent goodness of cerasse while mellowing the edge with citrus, natural sweetness, and a touch of warmth.
Cerasse Citrus Refresher
A smooth, slightly bitter but citrusy and uplifting tea with honeyed notes and cozy depth.
Ingredients:
-
1 tsp dried cerasse (or a small handful of fresh leaves)
-
2 cups hot water
-
1 tbsp fresh orange juice (to balance bitterness)
-
1 tsp lemon juice (adds brightness)
-
1 tsp honey (or maple syrup for a vegan option)
-
½ tsp grated ginger (optional – for warmth)
-
½ tsp cinnamon (optional – adds depth)
-
Fresh orange slices (for garnish)
Instructions:
-
Steep the cerasse in hot water for 5–7 minutes. The longer it steeps, the more intense the bitterness. Start light, taste, and build from there.
-
Strain the tea and mix in the orange juice, lemon juice, honey (or syrup), and ginger if you're using it.
-
Sprinkle in cinnamon for extra warmth and contrast.
-
Enjoy it hot or chill and pour it over ice for the most refreshing herbal cooler.
-
Garnish with a fresh orange slice if you want to add some flair.
